Dr. Fionnuala Murphy
Dr. Fionnuala Murphy is leading the ABC Economy Project. Dr. Murphy is an Assistant Professor in the UCD School of Biosystems & Food Engineering and is Programme Coordinator of the MSc in Sustainable Energy and Green Technologies and ME in Biosystems & Food Engineering. Her primary research interest focuses on understanding, quantifying and analysing complex environmental exchanges across the life cycle of products, processes and systems and, reciprocally, using this knowledge to better design bio and circular economies according to engineering principles. Nationally, she is an academic collaborator on the SFI funded BEACON Bioeconomy Research Centre.
Dr. Murphy is leading and participating in EU research in the bioeconomy as a Principal Investigator on; BBI SpiralG ‘Production of Phycocyanin from the Spirulina Arthrospira Sp.’, BBI AgriChemWhey ‘An integrated biorefinery for the conversion of dairy by-products to high value bio-based chemicals’, and H2020 AgroCycle ‘Sustainable techno-economic solutions for the agricultural value chain’. A key element of Dr. Murphy’s work is to carry out industry relevant research, participate in effective and relevant knowledge transfer, and foster links between industry and academia. She recently completed an SFI Industry Fellowship with Trifol Resources Ltd. assessing the environmental performance of novel end-of-life plastic valorisation technologies utilising state of the art consequential life cycle assessment methodologies. All Team
